Typical signs

These signs point to an infestation. On the phone, we help you assess what you have found.

  • Small round holes

The exit holes of the common furniture beetle are round and about one to two millimetres across.

  • Pale, fresh bore dust

Fresh dust is pale and lies in small heaps under the holes. Old dust is dark and dusty.

  • Pale hole edges

Sharp, pale edges point to fresh holes. Dark, worn edges often come from an old infestation.

  • Small beetles in early summer

Brown beetles a few millimetres long at the window or on the furniture have freshly emerged from the wood.

Useful facts about woodworm

The common furniture beetle lays its eggs in cracks in furniture, stairs or beams. The larvae then spend years eating tunnels through the wood; from the outside, you only see the small holes left by the beetles that have flown out.

Damp, untreated wood is particularly vulnerable, for example in unheated cellars, barns or holiday homes. From one infested piece, the beetles can spread to other furniture and wooden parts nearby.

Whether an infestation is still active determines the next steps. We check this on site and choose a method that suits the object, from antique furniture to the beams in your house.

How it works

From your call onwards, we take over – step by step.

  1. You call us

You describe where you found holes or bore dust. With photos we can already assess the suspicion.

  2. On-site check

The specialist checks whether the infestation is active, how deep it goes and whether load-bearing parts are affected.

  3. The right treatment

Depending on the object, heat treatment or approved wood preservatives may be used. Badly damaged parts may need to be replaced.

What you’ll want to know before calling

Honest answers to the questions almost everyone asks. We are happy to clarify anything else in person.

What does it cost?

Our prices are transparent and fair. Give us a call – we will discuss your situation and the next steps.

Is it safe for children and pets?

Wood preservatives belong only in expert hands. You will be told in advance whether, and for how long, a room should be avoided after treatment.

Will it stay discreet?

Yes. We arrive in neutral, unmarked vehicles and make sure your case is handled discreetly, so that outsiders notice nothing of the infestation.

How long does it take?

A treatment is usually done in a day. Whether it has worked shows when no fresh bore dust appears in the next flight season in early summer.

Questions about woodworm

Your question isn’t listed?
Ask us directly: 043 508 75 29

What exactly is woodworm?

It is the name for the larvae of various beetles, most commonly the common furniture beetle. The larvae feed in the wood for several years before the adult beetle flies out.

Do I have to throw away infested furniture?

Usually not. Many pieces can be treated and preserved. Only if the wood is badly eaten away is treatment no longer worthwhile.

Is an old infestation still dangerous?

Without fresh bore dust, an infestation has often died out. But this cannot always be told at first glance. A check gives you certainty.

When do the beetles fly out?

Usually in late spring and early summer. This is when new holes and fresh bore dust are most likely to appear.
