Typical signs
These signs point to an infestation. On the phone, we help you assess what you have found.
Caterpillars in single file
From late spring, hairy grey caterpillars move up and down the trunk in long lines.
Silken nests on the trunk
Greyish-white, bag-like nests of webbing sit on the trunk and in the forks of branches of oak trees, often full of shed skins.
Stripped branches
In early summer, the young oak leaves are missing from individual branches or whole parts of the crown.
Itchy rash
Redness and severe itching after spending time under oak trees can come from the stinging hairs.
If someone has difficulty breathing, severe swelling or stinging hairs in the eyes, get medical help immediately; in an emergency, call an ambulance. Ambulance: 144

Useful facts about the oak processionary moth
The oak processionary moth is a night-flying moth whose caterpillars eat their way through the leaves of oak trees in early summer. For people and animals, the problem is not the caterpillars themselves but their fine stinging hairs.
These irritate the skin, eyes and airways and remain active even in empty nests. Scraping, hosing or burning off the nests spreads the hairs into the surroundings instead of getting rid of them.
That is why only specialists with protective equipment should remove the nests. We vacuum off caterpillars and webbing so that the garden, playground or path can be used safely again afterwards.
How it works
From your call onwards, we take over – step by step.
-
You call us
You describe where the oak is and how many nests you can see. We clarify how urgent the job is.
-
Inspection with protective equipment
The specialist inspects the tree wearing a protective suit, respiratory protection and safety goggles, and plans how to reach the nests.
-
Vacuuming off the nests
Caterpillars and webbing are vacuumed off with a special vacuum and disposed of safely. This keeps as few stinging hairs as possible from reaching the surroundings.

Honest answers to the questions almost everyone asks. We are happy to clarify anything else in person.
What does it cost?
Our prices are transparent and fair. Give us a call – we will discuss your situation and the next steps.
Is it safe for children and pets?
The work is done with protective equipment and vacuum extraction. During the job, people and animals stay away from the area – you will be told in advance exactly how long.
Will it stay discreet?
Yes. We arrive in neutral, unmarked vehicles and make sure your case is handled discreetly, so that outsiders notice nothing of the infestation.
How long does it take?
One tree is usually done in a single appointment. Because caterpillars hatch at different times, a later check is worthwhile.

Why are the caterpillars dangerous?
Older caterpillars carry fine stinging hairs containing an irritant toxin. They break off easily, are carried by the wind and remain active in nests and in the soil for years.
When is the main season?
The caterpillars hatch in spring as the oaks come into leaf. From May to July they form stinging hairs and nests, after which they pupate.
Are only oaks affected?
Yes, the caterpillars feed almost exclusively on oak leaves. Webbing on other trees usually comes from harmless ermine moths.
Do the caterpillars come back every year?
Often, yes. The moths lay their eggs in the crown in high summer, and new caterpillars hatch there the following spring.
